The Perceptions of Elderly Self-Neglect: A close look at culture and cohort.
The research was mainly constituted to determine the variations in the perceptions that are associated with self-neglect behavioral patterns within four cultural groups and the same number of cohort. The data in this study was gathered from a number of students and the members of staff from a large university. The people involved were in attendance from various senior centers, and lastly from individuals that were taking part in the Southern California Cultural Affairs (Sylvia Marie San Filippo, 2009).
The research had two main hypotheses. The first one of these hypothesis state that; there existed no significant variation in the perceptions regarding self-neglect in the four cohorts that were considered in the study. The other hypothesis stated that there existed no significant observed difference in regarding the attitudes associated with self-neglect in the four cohorts.
In this study, the predictor or dependent variable was the score that was obtained from the questionnaire on the elderly self-neglect. The subjects that got accepted to be part of the were subjected to a series of questions from the questionnaire that required these individuals to give their opinions regarding self-neglect. The four cohorts in the study together with the four cultural groups comprised the predictor or independent variables in the study.
In overall, 494 operational studies were gathered in this study. The participants consisted of 16.8 percent white, 21.9 percent Americans of Asian descent, and 40.5percent were white,18.6 were Latinos and the remaining 2.2 consisted of the others other than those mentioned living in USA. In this study, the subjects got separated into four cohorts namely; the baby boomers, the senior citizens, the generation X and lastly the silent generation (Sylvia Marie San Filippo, 2009).
Gaining an understanding and proper identification of the factors that affected the incidence of elderly self-neglect was pointed out as very vital in this study. This is because it was mentioned as a basis and criteria used by the policy makers and the other family-based service providers (Sylvia 2009).
