The movie Through Deaf Eyes is basically a portrayal of the experience and life the deaf people in the American society. It reveals the struggles and problems faced by dead persons in history, when there wasn’t much done about their disability and how those people had to cope with their condition. I think the movie helps to give the world a comprehensive view about deaf people present in various fields of life including family, education, social life and work. The movie is actually an inspiration to me since it depicts how hard life can be without an essential ability like hearing. These people went through so much hard work in being able to decipher and respond to whoever is trying to communicate with them. It is actually quite hard for us who are blessed with all senses and well, that sign language can be used to communicate with others, as it seems quite complex and difficult especially knowing the fact that the person does not actually know what verbal language feels or sounds like. The real motivation behind this movie lay in the strength exhibited by the deaf who stood up for their rights to be treated as equal citizens who were only different in themselves and not disabled. The way they struggled to open up first school for deaf individuals campaigned to launch the deaf telephone, made efforts over the American Sign Language and got a deaf president elected at a university are all commendable.
I did not know sufficiently about deaf culture before I saw this movie, apart from the conventional concepts of sign language used by the deaf and dumb. However, this movie opened my eyes to a lot of insight about the deaf and truly was inspirational.
