Brief Summary
“Handy Helpers for Guided Reading” makes teachers understand that reading should be palatable for students or else the reading sessions will be useless. If the texts for the reading sessions are too difficult for the students to digest, the teacher will end up doing much of the work with a very low result for reading ability. The article also indicated some of the basic signs for the teacher to identify that the students are in a difficult situation with the text provided. It mentioned that if the students are nervous, fidget in their seats, or shows other inappropriate behaviours, the reading material is difficult. Moreover, the article indicated some guides for teachers to achieve a good result in the reading ability of the students. It mentioned a guiding attitude giving space for students to read independently. Minimizing halts during the reading sessions for corrections and repetitions will also help the students to focus on the text and build their reading confidence.
“How”
As a teacher, the material is helpful as I always encounter difficulties during the reading sessions with students. It made me understand that reading is like eating that we can only digest properly a spoonful. We will choke if the food we eat is too big and too large to digest. I will use the reading material in my next reading session with my students. I have a record of each of the student’s progress in reading ability and the text I will choose will be the average in order for those who have reading difficulty to cope and for the advance readers to cooperate.
During the reading session, I will ask them to tell the class of the words they still remember from the last reading activity. This time, I will avoid pin pointing students rather I will try create an environment which will enable volunteerism and comfort especially for the ones with reading difficulty. While they are reciting the words they can recall, I will take running notes on each of the children. During the actual reading session, I will break them into groups and instruct them to read independently using the knowledge they gained from the previous activities. The objective of the groupings will enable them to help one another in their difficulties. After their group readings, I will ask them of the words that they had difficulty in reading as well as the words that are easier for them to read. In order to test their reading ability, I will not instruct them to recite rather; I will instruct them to write several sentences of what they did during the day. This will give them the independence of speaking their thoughts without being halted.
