The article focuses on the news related to Malaysian naval contractor who pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him by the U.S federal government. The charges include bribery and conspiracy to defraud the United States with regards to overbilling in ship supplies and dockside services. The contractor Leonard Glenn Francis known as “Fat Leonard,” admits providing prostitutes’ services, trips and other lucrative gifts to the naval officers. The article indicates the level of corruption still present it the bureaucratic services and the demand of bribery prevailing among the government officials. For a common taxpayer, this episode is really a matter of concern and it also raises questions about the effectiveness of accountability system of the government. However, it is also a good sign that finally the culprit has been brought to justice and it depicts that even though there are loop-holes in the accountability system, yet the system still works.

The article describes how the North Korea government through her diplomats has taken its fight against the movie “the interview” to the next level. It is quite surprising how North Korean diplomats convinced the Myanmar authorities to crack down on the DVD sale points of the movie. The news certainly depicts the effectiveness of the North Korean diplomats as they were able to make the Myanmar authorities look things from North Korean perspective. The report becomes even more interesting when we consider that the relation between North Korea and Myanmar had remained suspended for many years and only been reinstated a few years ago.

It is a fair observation to make that royalty in some countries is very different from what is portrayed in the Hollywood. And it is true that in some countries the members of the royal family do abuse their positions to feather their own nests. There was another interesting point in the article; it reports that the future queen voluntarily surrendered her title. How voluntarily was that decision is an interesting matter of research under the current political situation in Thailand?
