In the interview, several themes emerged. Contingent upon how one perceives them, the themes revolve sexuality and the roles of parents. In particular, the themes include but are not limited to the following: the manly roles of the father, the mother’s role in the relationship and in keeping the family intact, the sexual roles of men and women which can be caused by societal dictations or values that have been passed on from generation to generations.
In analyzing the flow of the interview, it is also important to take into account the background of the interviewee. Tom grew up without a strong relationship foundation with a father. This created his anxiety as he feels he is not aware of how to deal with his son in a positive and effective manner. The strength of the interview lies in the idea that both interviewees were completely open to share their experiences. Susan grew up in a chaotic environment where she often witnessed her parents fighting and her father having an affair. Yet, Susan’s mother emphasized the need to stick in marriage no matter how much pain it would cause knowing that her husband has another woman. In the end, however, both Tom’s and Susan’s parents reunited.
Genograms is a great device to use in family and marriage counseling. Genograms help the therapists in creating a structure and to make the family understand the complexities in forming the bond (McGoldrick, Gerson, & Petry, 2008). Moreover, genograms facilitate in delineating the roles of every family member. Genograms also offer an excellent point of reference in assessing and forming questions that family members will likely have. The flexibility of genograms makes it possible to update and expand the information for clients to follow.
