1) One of the realities in the documentary film entitled Equality U that shocked me is that in the 21st century, there are still institutions in the country that do not recognize the existence of the Lesbians, Gays Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities that released a statement rejecting the Equality Riders is a one of the many institutions that shun the reality of homosexuality. These institutions are bearers of grave intolerance. It is saddening to even hear watch that LGBT community are arrested just because they are exercising their rights to express who they are. In the 21st century, the 19 colleges and universities that are shunning homosexual students are thinking back in the Stone Age. They do not realize that they are contributing to the suicidal rates among the LGBT community.
2) One of the Soulforce co-founder said and I quote: “These folks are victims of misinformation.” It meant that the religious institutions among others are being used to instil among the youth that homosexuality is a sin. The Soulforce wants to correct the notion that being gay is a “misuse of God’s gift.” They want to instil among the youth especially among the LGBT community that God embraces all people regardless of sexuality. One of the Soulforce members said during the tribute activity for all homosexuals who have taken suicide as a choice because of intolerance, “and we say to all those who are suffering today, God loves you. God loves you without reservation.”
3) After watching the Equality U documentary, I think the purpose of the equality riders is to battle intolerance against the homosexuality. The ride aims to empower the LGBT community in fundamentalist schools to speak up for their rights and spread the rights to all the schools. The riders during in the duration of the equality ride are empowered through the sharing sessions with other students. At the same time, they also touch the lives of those who are trapped in the culture of silence. Moreover, in battling intolerance, they promote the culture of acceptance even in backyards of religious fundamentalist. In the promotion of acceptance, the rates of suicide because of intolerance will eventually drop.
