The song Last Time by Taylor Swift ft. Gary Lightbody can be interpreted into two perspectives. As a duet it is important to look at the perspective of the two singers. For Lightbody’s parts in the song it appears as if he knows that he always leaves for whatever reason because he fears commitment. When he leaves he expects the woman to be waiting for his return. The woman religiously waits for him no matter how many times he leaves. In reality, he cannot imagine her moving on with somebody else. He knows in the back of his mind that he is selfish, but he still does it because he cannot imagine the woman with anyone but him but knows he can only give so much as return.
The other perspective is of course if the woman’s (Taylor Swift). Compared to the man’s case, her lyrics are easier to interpret because it implies that she waits for him. At some point she feels that she is strong enough to live him, but reality is that she cannot. All she can do that one day that the guy will have a change of heart and stay. A paradoxical line in the songs reveals this, when she sings the lines, I'm falling apart because your back, but I fall apart when you're gone. She hopefully wishes that they can start over again but knows it’s too late.
The entire composition of the song combines for the sad but relatable aura of the song. The instrumentals give additional feels to the good duet of Swift and Lightbody. The song is relatable to me because I know how it feels to wait for someone who I know will leave and keep me hanging.
