A Centralized Directory System (CDS) uses one main server to link a number of client computers and other electronics assigned under it. This is in contrast to having individual servers and desktops running simultaneously with no central point of communication. A Centralized Directory System has several advantages over the individual server/desktop system.
For effective performance and management, a manager should be able to create and manage client privileges when it comes to information access: hence enhance the security of data. A CDS makes this possible by allowing one to create different client groups and the information they are allowed to access from the server. The clients under a particular group share a common name or domain. This way, only a person from the finance docket can access the company’s financial data. In contrast to server/desktop system where information is scattered on all computers or an individual computer and anyone with the computer password can access the information.
The CDS provides for a single information destination and dissemination point. In this system, all information from different clients is stored in the server. If a particular client needs to access this information later, they only need to login with their names and access the information based on their privileges. Whereas in the server/desktop system, if there are two accountants in an organisation, for one to access some financial details that his counterpart has, the desktops must have been set to allow sharing of information, otherwise he would have to use manual means such as flash disk to get the information; a process that is tedious and time consuming.
A CDS has information redundancy as well as power supply and drives. This is to enable it to function fast and efficiently as it supports several machines that may require the same information at the same time. This is a feature that desktop/server system does not have.
Finally a CDS has a backup system that stores all the data from the organisation separately for safety purposes. In case of a system failure, all company data is secure. However in the desktop /server system, in case a server crashes, all the information is lost with it.
