The majority of people today do not believe biology and faith are able to coexist. They often have conflicting ideas and appear to contradict one another. Faith overrides many biological ideas, while biology attempts to silence faith’s words of guidance. However, Richard R. Wright believes that to live in a comprehensive world that truly makes sense, we must attempt to combine both biology and faith in an effort to understand everything around us. Wright understands it will take an individual of faith, who also understands biology to align the two topics.
Concerning my personal view on life origins, though Wright’s arguments are compelling, and I do have certain spiritual beliefs, I do lean more towards a biological persuasion. There are likely spiritual aspects that had a hand in the origins of life, pointed out by Wright. As stated, how else could such grand design take place. However, the pure science is undeniable. There are too many unanswered questions that cannot be answered by simply stating, “God did it.” I seek truths that cannot be found in a bible. For this reason, and this reason along, my thoughts upon life origin are more scientific than spiritual.
Though this is the case, I do not deny myself spirituality. I feel it all around me each day. There is also no denying the beauty in the creation around us, nor the marvel in what has grown upon the Earth. Something great is at work here, and I am aware that to deny such a fact would be foolish. What would be equally foolish, though, would be to attempt to deny the idea that science plays no part or an equal part as faith and spirituality in the science of the world. Prayer did not cause the planets to burst forth, for there were no humans to pray. Nor did it cause the dinosaurs to walk among the Earth, only to be extinguished by a massive asteroid. There are simply many things that cannot be answered or explained by faith.
It is a tricky situation, I will admit. For example, while I have faith that gravity will keep me affixed to the Earth, I understand it is not my faith in gravity that is causing it to work. Even if I lost my faith in gravity, or became sure that it would fail to work, it would continue to hold me to the Earth’s surface. Try as I might to get away, I would remain attached close to the Earth, unable to jettison into the stratosphere. Similarly, I am aware that my faith in spirituality can remain or it can wane, but regardless of what it does, it does not mean the spiritual side of life and existence ceases to be. As previously mentioned, then, to deny it is a part of the origins of life would be a folly on my behalf. I merely understand science allows me to answer more questions about where I have originated from, why I am here, and where I am going biologically, than faith will ever allow me to answer. The key, essentially, is to understand that both schools of thought are allowed to coincide. They do not have to silence one another, or speak over one another, but instead they can support one another.
In sum, I believe in both faith and biology when it comes to my views on the origin of life. Wright was correct in believing it would take a faith based individual to align these thoughts. I do not believe they will ever be fully aligned, as some of the ideas are simply too contradictory. However, I do believe that many of the ideas allow for support in one another, and that one may recognize that faith and biology both play a hand in our origin of life. We are not here only because of faith, or only because of biology. The two managed to coalesce, creating the beauty around us that we now enjoy.
