Creating a family is a natural outcome of a relationship where two people love and care for each other. Even though this seems fairly simple and obvious, there are often hassles and challenges individuals have to go through to reach this goal. It is especially the case of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who while having same feelings and emotions, cannot enjoy the same freedoms as the rest of the society. The movie Boys Don’t Cry, directed by Kimberly Peirce and co-written by Andy Bienen, is a bright and very tragic illustration of such an issue.
The movie depicts Brendon Teena, a young female-to-male transgender man with trоubled past. More precisely, the picture focuses on his romantic connection with Lana Tisdel and all the challenges such relationship brings. Kimberly Peirce and the rest of the team of movie makers succeeded in creating quite a personal and intimate atmosphere, so the audience can see the story from Brendon’s perspective. They managed to let those who watch the movie to feel all the pains and fears of the main character, as well as confusion and rejection he has to go through because of his choice. There was a positive note in the movie though, which was a genuine love Lana felt towards Brandon. She was ready to accept him no matter who he was, which must have taken a lot of lot of courage for her.
You start to sympathize Brendon even more when you learn that he is actually not a fictional character, and the plot is not really made-up. This is a dramatic life story of a real person which reveals the hardiness of a whole social class. It has been a long struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals to gain freedom and recognition. Even though the situation has way improved since the time Brandon Teena lived, many issues have remained unsolved.
It is way more difficult for transgender people to find their place in the society than for the rest of us. They sometimes lose their jobs, homes and support of their relatives and friends. They can be abused and discriminated in their surroundings and as a result suffer from depression or anxiety. Though creating a family could be the only way for them to become happy, such issues should be taken into consideration. Besides, it is not only a transgender person who may suffer, but their partner should be ready for that as well. As in the movie, while Lana was supportive of Brendon, she had to face the misunderstanding and intolerance of her mother and those whom she considered to be her friends.
Furthermore, even when transgender relationship is recognized, a new problem arises if such family decides to have children. Apart from the issue of conceiving or adopting kids, raising them in transgender family possesses many threats. For LGBT parents to be a proper role model for the child and to gain his understanding, as well as to protect him from bullying and help to find confidence is much more complicated task than for an ordinary ones. Though the attitudes are changing overall making the life of transgender families easier, there will always be individuals discriminating and assaulting them.
I felt distressed about the ending of the film and even more discouraged to learn that the actual Brandon Teena had died that way. If the things turned out differently, it seems to me that Brandon and Lana could have created a strong family and would have managed to become happy.
