A canned health program is a program that comes packaged with information and is not customizable. These programs are beneficial for individuals looking for already established programs, proven methods and want to get started with the program right away.
One of these such programs is the Smoke Free promotion sponsored by the Tobacco Control Research Branch of the National Cancer Institute. The promotion is available at smokefree.gov. Some of the pros of the Smoke Free program includes an interactive website, ways to get healthy, targeted Smoke Free campaigns and a quit plan. The website is interactive and everything is labeled effectively. Each tab is clickable and displays additional information. There are also tips and way on how to get healthy, which includes eating right, and getting the right amount of exercise. The promotion also provides specific campaigns targeted to veterans, teens, women and Spanish language individuals. These programs are designed to address their needs on a specialized basis. Another pro of this program is the Quit Plan. The Smoke Free promotion, (n.d.) states that the Quit plans combine quit smoking strategies to keep the individual focused, confident, and motivated to quit, helps identify challenges and ways to overcome them (Smoke Free, n.d.).
Some of the cons of the Smoke Free promotion is the lack of printable materials and a lack of guided modules. Although there is a lot of information presented on the website, there are no brochures or printable pamphlets. There are printable worksheets, but it would be helpful to have printable brochures for individuals who prefer to read the documents offline.
Another con of this promotion is that there is no “start here” guide for individuals to follow. There are many clickable tabs, however, the information could be confusing to someone who is not sure where to begin. There needs to be a standard outline for this program, as an outline would make navigation easier for participants to follow.
