The advancement in technology has its own advantages and disadvantages, especially progress in computer games. Computer games have been evolving every day because of the variations in the lifestyle of youth. Video game addiction can be defined as uncontrollable game-playing, where the players are totally isolated socially, have too much mood swings, less imagining capability, and are irresponsible to the other events in life. Nearly 88 percent of young people in the U.S. play video games, which indicates that up to 3 million could be showing signs of addiction . Apart from the addiction, health hazards are common among the addicts and various treatment centers have been set up in major countries such as China, U.S., South Korea and Canada to help people lead a normal life. This paper discusses about Video Game Addiction, its impact on the users, public concern, and diagnosis strategies.
Teenagers love to adventure in any sports, and in cases of videos they are hard-wired to seek adventure and take risks. It is been analyzed that most of the video game addictions are caused because the brain processes images in a very basic and specific way; deep down the brain does not usually pause to distinguish between every day, real images and those that we see in the mirror, on the television or in the video game . High scores, discovering new techniques, building relationships with the online gaming partners, creating new characters in the game, and the challenge to beat the programmed are certainly few major causes of video game addiction. Credits must also be given to the game designers who make the game interesting and addictive for the beginner to get addicted. Video games can snatch a person’s attention away, and the sense of space in a video game brings the gamers closer to the things that really matter in real life .
Impact of Video Game Addiction on the players
Video game addiction can be related to substance addiction, which contains sufficient dangers to unsympathetically corrupt a person’s life. The impact of violence in a video game was found to have an effect on how children played, but curiously this impact was largely confined to girls . People playing video games for longer periods are deprived of sleep, which can be carried to their workplaces resulting in less productivity and habitual slowness. The other impacts of video game addiction are health hazards, eye-hand coordination, pattern of daily activities, school routine, personality and psycho-pathology and pro-social activities . Few long-term effects are related to financial, educational and job-related consequences.
Public Concern. As the popularity of video game addiction grew rapidly, so did the level of public concern about the possible deleterious impact of these games . Researchers have analyzed that social dependence is on rise because of video games occurring online where players intermingle with each other building a virtual relationship, which often become imperative for gamers than real-life relationships. Public is concerned to understand the contact between risk glorifying gaming content and risk taking actions, understandings and sentiments associated with the video games. Anxiety of video games because of the growing prevalence and increased use in various walks of information technology .
Conclusion. As video game addiction is been linked to depression, less sleep and not caring one’s own health, it can be related that substance abuse is also a contributor in these gamers grief from this neurotic disorder. Though video game addiction is not considered to be a mental disorder the diagnose results prove that gamers have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, and anxiety. This addiction can be cured through treatments and therapies and proper guidance to the gamers.
