Christian Scriptures Essays Example
Reading scriptures is different from studying them is one of the most important lessons that I have learnt in class. Many a times, people fall victims to wrong scripture interpretations simply because they do not take time to study and analyze them, however, being in this class has taught me to analyze a scripture basing on the people that are involved in it, their historical background, the event they are engaged in and the subject of the scripture. Studying a single scripture also helps a student of the bible to connect other scriptures in the bible and hence having a wider view and knowledge of the word. I realized that there is no bible passage or even scripture that stands on its own. We were mostly taught scriptures basing on the longest verse, the shortest verse, book and the likes. However, as I went through the class, I realized that the length of the scripture or passage makes very little sense compared to the meaning in it. The longest scripture could be having a less detailed meaning compared to the shortest scripture. There is no verse that was written in the bible to be dependent; a bible student hence needs to analyze it basing on other scriptures for a comprehensive meaning.
The class has taught me to believe that the bible was written through divine inspiration, looking at the different revelations that a person gets, every time they read the bible. The dynamic nature of the scriptures has also made them to be used to manipulate unsuspecting audience. A scripture has been written to have the ability to speak to a person in different ways and reveal a different message to different people. A person can always understand a scripture in the way that suits their interests and wants. This hence implies that people who rely on other to give them an interpretation of a scripture could miss a personal revelation. The scripture may not minister to them the same way it would if they took time to personally read and understand it. The work of preachers and bible teachers is to provide guidance and let the audience know that a scripture could be understood in many different ways. The emphasis of personal bible study should hence be stressed by those who are interested in growing others spiritually.
There is a general deception among many people that the old and the New Testament are independent books of the bible. In fact, many people shun from reading the Old Testament with the view that it was written in a dispensation that is not applicable to them. The class has helped to know that a person will understand the New Testament best after understanding the Old Testament. The books could have been written in different times and dispensation, yet it is a continuation of the same story of salvation. The Old Testament gives a detailed background of what happened in the New Testament. In fact, a person who is keen on reading the scripture will understand that most of the scriptures in the New Testament are actually derived from the Old Testament. By this, it implies that a person can understand the entire bible well by only reading the old testament, on the contrary, a person cannot understand the bible if they only read the old testament. In a nutshell, I realized that no scripture, verse or book of the bible is independent. They all rely on each other to make sense and bring meaning to bible study.
