Civil Engineering Activities Essay Examples

Several risks affect civil engineers especially in the field similar to any other industry. There are situations that can be risky for the workers especially if employees, as well as the employers fail to take precautionary measures to combat and reduce the risk factors. If these problems are not addressed appropriately then the workers will be injured and sometimes result to death at the workplace. It shows the need to assess the risks in the civil engineering activities. This way they will stay safe and will not result into deaths and illnesses due to the situations that are at the work place. There are several ways that the supervisors can do the risk assessments.
First, the supervisors need to understand the area that they are working in bearing in mind that it will enable them understand the risks that are prone to exist. Without a doubt, it goes a long way on ensuring that they precautionary measures will be effective. An example is in roads or buildings. They will analyze and see the health risks that are associated in the areas. Then, they will work on measures that will be set to prevent the workers from being infected. Through this, the supervisors and the employees know what they have to do to prevent the illnesses from affecting its staff.
The next step, the supervisors inform the employees and give them the guidelines on what they are supposed to do to minimize the risks that they may encounter in the work place. This is the main methods that risk assessment is done. The workers are given a list of do’s and don’ts when in certain positions. An example is when in a high building on the positions that they should stay in. Therefore, in risk assessment, the employer is supposed to set the rules that will safeguard the employees after assessing the possible risks that could be encountered (Colomo 2013).

Applying Risk Assessment

The supervisors at the site are always given the mandate to ensure that the engineers follow the set regulations. They already have the knowledge of some of the rules that they were taught as they became engineers and the regulations set by the employer. They ensure that all the workers wear protective gear so that they can avoid being injured or coming into contact with contaminated objects. The supervisor is held responsible if any misconduct occurs in the workplace. They have the ability to stop anyone who defies the regulations so that they can avoid scandals. Cases of civil engineers dying are always costly to the employer and, therefore, the increased need to apply the rules in such a manner.

Justification of the Assessment of Risks

The assessment if risks and applying is important as it helps save lives. If assessments are not done then there will be many deaths at workplaces where civil engineers are located. An example is in the clothing. If proper clothing for the situation was made then there will be many illnesses in the Civil engineers that may result to the death of many of the workers (Harris, & Short 2014).
There will be cases of ailment in the workers to either contamination or other similar effects that they cannot foresee. An assessment also helps the civil engineers to concentrate on their work, as they know that they are protected from such incidents. They are also aware of what they should follow and how they are supposed to do it. If they are settled, and feel secure about being in the workplace then they will produce high quality work.

Civil Engineers in Haiti

The civil engineers in Haiti have had no assessment done on the risks that they can encounter while building these houses. They have to just expect the unknown and sometimes it affects them negatively. They are not aware of how to solve certain problems and this has resulted to several illnesses that were acquired in the work place. These risks are very hard for them to even notice when they are going to start affecting them.
Some of the risks that the civil engineers face include; falling off from the buildings due to the lack of proper holding materials, subject to injuries from nails, woods and other sharp objects as they lack proper clothing and they are exposed to sicknesses like cold. The civil engineers in Haiti also receive low payments. After being subjected to the above risks, they may not be able to look out for themselves due to the low wages. Unrest and the emergence of illegal groupings is also a security risk that always leaves the engineers injured or killed by the gangs.
