The chapter’s treatment of Gordon’s case is excellent. This is attributable to the fact that in the assessment phase the counselors considered Gordon’s motivation to change. This is an important aspect of the intervention since it helps in determining the ability of the individual effective the required changes. Highly motivated individuals will easily adopt changes as compared to individuals without any self-motivation. Furthermore, confrontation is also very important part of Gordon’s treatment. Confrontation is an important counselling tool that a counsellor can use in order to challenge Gordon. Through confrontation, the counselor can be able to bring to Gordon’s attention some aspects of the crisis that he may be overlooking or avoiding. It is an effective method of ensuring that Gordon understands and is aware of what is needed in order to ensure that he can grow.
There are three critical points of intervention that I agree with. The first intervention point is the assessment of the individual as well as the cause of the crisis experienced. This is an important point of intervention as it provides a clear picture of the crisis that faced the individual under intervention. The second intervention point is determining an individual’s reaction to the crisis that they are facing. The reactions that need to be assessed at this point include emotions reactions, physical reactions, and mental reactions. It is important to assess an individual’s reaction to the crisis since it will provide information on the emotional, physical, and mental position of the individual. During this stage, the mental, emotional, and physical characteristics of an individual can be determined in order to determine the individual’s ability to cope with the problems faced. The third intervention point is accepting responsibility. This is important as it helps to ensure that the client is aware that they are responsible over all aspects that surround them.
