Compairing Two Perspectives: Buddhism Vs. Confucianism Essay
If Jamie were a Buddhist, he would have voted no. The beliefs and practices of Buddhists are based on teachings that are attributed to Siddhartha Gautama. Siddhartha Gautama is renowned for sharing his insights to assist sentient beings to end their suffering. Buddhists are known for supporting the monastic community. Buddhism puts a lot of emphasis on compassion. Compassion is all about sympathy, concern and consideration. This is the reason Jamie would vote no. He will show sympathy and consider helping the small tent community instead of passing a law that will not mind the suffering these communities are enduring. Jamie will be sensitive to what the situation call for and try to help in any way possible. Buddhism offers individuals with alternatives since the world we live in is part of the samsara (i.e. the realm of craving and suffering). (Leidy, 2008)
If Jamie were a Confucian, he would have voted no. Confucianism is all about being humanistic. The Confucian ethical obligation, for instance, Ren puts a lot of emphasis on altruism and humaneness for other people. Jamie would, as a result, be bound to say no to the proposed law given that it is contrary to the practice of being unselfish, which is the core of Confucianism. It will be selfish of Jamie to allow the law to be passed, given that the law will make it illegal for tent communities to be permitted in these areas. The proposed law, when passed, will make the life of the small tent community, which is already difficult, to be more difficult. This is not humanity, which Confucianism seeks to promote. Therefore, Jamie will be acting on the standards of Confucianism when rejecting the law. (Slote .H & De Vos, 1988. Pg. 13)
