A conclusion is an important part of writing. It offers the reader powerful message to take away from the reading when it’s all done. A conclusion can give a summary of the main points discussed in a piece; it can give results or restate the main point. The three articles, ‘Corn Porn Opinions’, ‘The Hills of Zion’ and ‘How it Feels to be Colored Me,’ all have unique conclusions that depart from the norm.
Mencken’s ‘The Hills of Zion’s’ conclusion offers a summary of the story by giving details on the final action by the characters. Starting with the statement ‘finally, we got tired of the show and returned to Dayton,’ the author goes ahead and gives a description of the action in the town courtyard. The description of the on-going argument does not provide a conclusion to the argument; it instead raises more questions from the theologians’ debate. This conclusion is unique as it provides a summary of the story while at the same time leaving the audience with suspense that is thought-provoking.
On the other hand, ‘How it Feels to be Colored Me’ does not a have a conclusion that looks like one. It offers thought provoking statements for the reader by sharing the emotions of the persona. However, through the many thought-provoking rhetorical questions, a reader gets to arrive at a conclusion in the very last line of the essay.
Even though ‘Corn Porn Opinions’ does not a phrase signaling a conclusion, the piece offers a conclusion by summarizing the main point in the essay and offering a closing statement in the last line. Mark Twain reiterates his two opposing viewpoints before finally making his concluding remark.
