In Mix It Up, Grazian is exploring the increasing role of mass media and popular culture in shaping our daily lives, from our eating habits to our perception of the government and the world in general. Based on my readings, I think that the main argument of Grazian in Mix it Up is that media and popular culture are becoming diverse and so dynamic that it has become a huge influencing factor in the lives of Americans. The author utilizes a social imagination that delves into the rather mysterious mechanism of media and popular culture and how they impact political ideologies, cultural undertakings, and social processes. The author has found out that media and popular culture, over time, has gradually integrated the “necessity” of being able to engage in any form of entertainment or other thematic strategies of popular culture such that the media is now deeply embedded to the cultural norms of America. Furthermore, owing to this development is the growing importance of leisure such as sports and shopping because the cultural standards as described in many media platforms altered the traditional views about American life. The author answers questions about how does the entertainment or media industry decide on what programs they have to make available to the public? What are the real effects of technology? While the author richly touches on these issues, I am even more interested to read about his conjectures of the future of media industry and popular culture and how it could be a potentially universal phenomenon that will affect every nation in the world.
