I am a senior woman with severe osteoarthritis in both hips, confined to a wheelchair. I live with my husband and daughter in a two-story home, but cannot access the upper floors anymore. I am waiting for insurance approval for two total hip replacements. My husband cares for my needs, but he is still working and I am frequently left alone.
Special Needs 1: Pain Management for osteoarthritis and neuralgia
Medications – Tramadol 50 mg four times daily prn for moderate to severe pain,
Hydrocodone 150 mg four times daily prn for severe pain, Gabapentin (for nerve
pain) 300 mg TID
Warm baths or heating pad
Massage
Elevate feet
Mild to moderate exercise
Special Needs 2: Increased Mobility
Pain management (see above)
Mild to moderate exercise/range of motion
Medications to reduce swelling – Meloxicam 7.5 mg daily
Special Needs 3: Decrease Depression/Isolation
Individual and Family Counseling
Medication: Escitalopram 20 mg daily
Encourage outside activities alone and with family; clubs, shopping, restaurants, movies,
other outings, church, and so on.
Encourage visits by friends and family at least one weekly for coffee or a meal to
maintain friendships and outside interests.
Special Needs 4: Safety
Teach patient how to effectively transfer from wheelchair to furniture and to the car seat.
Encourage installation of hand rails in the bathtub.
Keep cell phone at hand at all times in the event of a fall or other emergency.
Promote elevated toilet seat.
Educate family members on safety needs such as assistance with transfers.
