Mental health refers to ones’ psychological, emotional and social well-being, affecting the way one feels, thinks and respond in their daily life. It aids in determination of how one relates to others, handle stress or in making decisions. It is important that proper mental health is maintained by everyone inclusive of children. Ones’ daily activities, choices and relation to others, usually depend on their mental health.
Mental illness is disorders that affect one’s moods, thoughts or behavior. Globally, current health problems associated with mental disorder include depression, drug and alcohol abuse, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, migraines, dementia and epilepsy. Symptoms may be changes in personal habits, moods, social withdrawal and many others. The illness may be associated with excessive stress on a particular situation or can be due to a series of events.
There has been an increase in mental health care for mental disorders by nurses in many hospitals. Nurses may have attitudes towards the provision of care to mentally ill victims. They may dismiss it as not being their role to provide care, but for family members and caregivers. At times, nurses may at times be mentally disturbed by what they see in their daily care providing routine. However, they are not said to be impaired.
Global health improves individuals’ health in all the nations whereby wellness and the elimination of avoidable diseases, death and disability is promoted. This can be achieved through health promotions and preventive measures of diseases in populations with the clinical care of individual-level. According to Robinson et al. (2007, p. 104), health promotion and prevention of disease leads to a society that is health-friendly. For instance, in the United States, contribution to the achievement of global health has been done by an area of research, study and practice.
Several strategies have been followed by nurses in global health problem improvement like
formation of federations. For instance, International Council of Nurses works in enabling nurses influence policies in health. Nurses are usually collaborative and are aware that certain disorders including mental illness have no borders and proper care is to be administered duly. They increase inter-professional cooperation and coordinate efforts.
Mental health being state of successful mental functioning performance, results in activities that are productive, ability in adapting to any change and improving relationship with others. It is essential in interpersonal and family relationships, ones’ well-being and contribution to society. Mental health can be improved via ensuring access to quality health services and through prevention as well. This is all due to the fact that unattended mental disorders usually lead to disabilities.
