The streams of the articles given and the life of Tim Levitch converge and diverge in a number of ways. In essence, the subject matter of all these works is on urbanization and the impact it has on the lives of human beings. ‘The Cruise’ gives a vivid description of what life is like in New York City, full of people doing different things. Levitch prefers work in a smaller company because of the satisfaction he gets from it, unlike the bigger Apple Line. The Apple Line did not pay as much as he desired.
All these articles seem to agree on certain issues: that urbanization has ensured a steady increase of people in the cities. With this, the quality of life people lead depends on what they can make. Seed, for instance, prefers to work in the tour industry so that he can get a chance to meet many girls. According to Louis Wirth’s article (urbanism), several challenges arise in the cities which, if not mitigated, could affect the economy of the nation. This is consistent with the life that Speed lives. He lacks a permanent home and lives in the houses of his friends. The question that arises is the extent to which the community is responsible for the well-being of an individual. Has humanity lost its essence?
‘Networks, Networks & Communities’ by Wellman and Leighton also seems to concur with the above challenges. Humans have lost the sense of humanity and community, preferring to be categorized according to their desires. With this, community has lost its sense. Whereas the articles diverge when it comes to the ways in which humanity has been lost, the common argument they give is that a solution must be found.
