United States of America has always symbolised personal freedom and freedom of choice, while the authority took minimal interest in being over-protective, interfering in the personal lives of its citizens. Their scientific bent of mind has always allowed them to ask intelligent questions and take informed decisions. The exposure of UV rays has its own positive impact on the human body. For instance it is the best known source of Vitamin D. Raising of the serum levels of Vitamin D is known to be lowering the risk of colorectal and breast cancer. Exposure to sunlight also helps maintain circadian rhythm other than increasing the serotonin levels that makes an individual alert and awake. Also skin exposed to UV rays releases Nitric Oxide that lowers blood pressure. Also exposure to UVB rays actually reduces the risk of melanoma. A healthy daily dose of Vitamin D helps in reducing the occurrence of sclerosis, seasonal disorders and depression. However, longer exposure to a mix of UV A & B rays like that of from the tanning beds that are harmful to the skin and could lead to skin cancers. Despite this, if an independent citizen of this great nation decides that he wants a good tan and is unable to get it naturally, he has the independent thought to choose a tanning bed. And this is a decision he makes consciously. When a citizen is making a decision with full cognition why the use of the product should be banned? Tanning beds are products that emit both UV A & B rays and are also known to be causing variety of diseases. Especially, the UV – A, longer wavelength rays.
The solution here is that the government, the FDA and other health related authorities could put in a process that every user of tanning bed must conform to. There must be elaborate procedures which at different stages the user must be explained the possible harmful effects of using the tanning beds and must sign a consent. Let the American citizens be subject to free will and enabled to take independent decisions!
