The article, The Impact of Illiteracy on the Family and Society, dwells on the significance of education or literacy in societies and families. The article ideally posits its argument by drawing evidence from key institutions and pundits regarding prevalence and significance of literacy on a global scale. This paper however, evaluates a passage that is part of the article. To achieve its coherence and literal flow, the passage in focus employs integral aspects of writing.
The rhetorical modes used in the passage are primarily, expository and argumentation. The passage offers extensive explanation on the impact and significance of literacy on the familial and societal level. Using evidence in form of statistics drawn from institutions and accomplished pundits, the passage is structured to inform and analyze relevant evidence regarding the subject. On argumentation, the author of the passage tries to inject validity to the subject by persuading the audience on the significance of literacy. Using comparisons and examples, the article illustrates the plight endured by the illiterate against the benefits accrued by the literate.
As for the audience, the passage can be said to be aimed at the general public that is keen on alleviating the problem of illiteracy. The article employs simple jargon to posit information drawn from various academic sources. The author uses common examples that are easily identifiable and understandable by the target audience. For instance, the author draws the audience to how the illiterate cite that they forgot their glasses to avoid in engaging in any literal discourse. Additionally, the passage offers an insightful look on the author’s point of view. The passage is structured to illustrate the author’s support for literacy as an instrumental tool in the economic, social and political growth of any country or society.
The writer’s purpose is established by the subject of the passage. The passage focuses on the theme of literacy analyzing it from a global level to a personal one. The author further employs an authoritative and concerned tone to exemplify his message. The use of credible sources of evidence in the passage makes the writer posit his subject in a confident manner. Citing UNESCO and pundits such as Carlos Mutore, the author manages to state firmly facts regarding the significance of literacy in the familial and societal level.
The structure of the passage employs a descriptive approach. The authors in various paragraphs dissect the problem of illiteracy citing its prevalence on both societal and individual level. Using the descriptive structure, the author also incorporates evidence and scenarios to depict the significance of literacy. To evaluate the passage effectively, there is need to focus on the tense. The author uses past tense due to great allusion to past evidence as well as the context of the passage.
The figurative language is minimally used in the passage. Use of metaphors and personification are used in the passage to appeal to the audience. The phrase “crippling fear” for instance is used metaphorically to depict the intensified fear associated with limitations drawn from illiteracy. The phrase “a tragedy that would linger” is a case of the author using personification to illustrate the magnitude of illiteracy as a tragedy that may take time to contain. As for the mechanics observed in the passage, the author uses transitional words capitalization, punctuation and word choice. The transitional words such as “however”, “on the other hand” are used to assume a seamless flow in the passages. Capitalization, on the other hand, is used to denote proper nouns and proper sentence structures. Punctuation, as part of the mechanics of writing, is used effectively to highlight direct quotes and sentence structure. The author pays particular attention to the word choice to effectively establish idioms and vocabularies that are essential in the coherence of the passage.
