The international organization for labors has estimated that there approximately six hundred million folks in all over the globe who are assorted as disabled. Even though, different countries, states and local governments worldwide working a lot for the disabled people to render these individuals better opportunities of obtaining and holding sufficient employment, but the special people of society are still finding it quite hard to catch the central positions in various industries.
Without any doubt, several physical weaknesses do exist with the disabled employees. But a whole multitude of pervasive myths regarding disabled population plays a bigger part in hindering their growth in the working place. It consequently keeps well qualified disabled people either completely out of the jobs or does not let them accomplishing the goals and core positions in the industry/company which they truly deserve. Some of the reasons behind it are exposed here.
Productivity and Speed
Sometimes disabilities imply that such employees are unable to complete the assigned chores at a speed as compared to the normal workers. For instance, an individual with any physical disability might take a bit more time to more certain equipment, whereas somebody with any kind of mental disability might need a bit longer time in order to read, write and interpret various documents. It at times could make a difference to a certain degree where competence to maintain the speed affects other core functions of a company like the assembly line of a factory.
However, in other industries/companies, it isn’t necessarily a noteworthy disadvantage, such as business like art restoration where quality of each and every project matters more as compared to the speed. The disabled people must target those companies where the working environment does not get unbalanced due to their any physical or mental weakness.
Discrimination
Even though there are quite a few Disabilities Acts and other similar laws are present in different countries of the world, which have helped a lot in opening doors of workplaces for the handicapped folks, but still there are hundreds and thousands of disabled workers who often face unfairness. For instance, the workfellows might not like to have the disabled people as their team members, especially if their disability is becoming a cause of slowing down the speed of the project.
In several cases, such kinds of issues could force the human resource department members to intercede and patch up the conflicts. This is where the disabled employees might need some resources and time to remind everyone the rights of handicapped workers, as well as the definitions and upshots of the workplace discrimination.
Lack of Updated Technology and Infrastructures
In different countries of the world, the employers are bound to make some reasonable workplace accommodations so that the disabled people can do their job without facing any significant hassle during the working hours if hired. They might need to install some sort of ramp for wheelchair or modify diverse aspects of handicapped candidate’s workstation, depending upon the severity and form of his/her disability. In order to make this done, employers need some time, which at times entail there’s a halt in the active employment of disables or the completion of particular projects. In addition to it, there are so many companies which are not fully aware of the latest technologies, which people with certain physical or mental disabilities might need.
Plus, there might be fewer folks on the site which could help the disabled employees, especially in the case the technologies or infrastructure is not updated according to the needs of disabled people. It is also imperative to mention here that modification in the infrastructures and technology for handicapped workers isn’t necessarily a fiscal burden upon the employers, since the loyalty and productivity of these special employees often manage to compensate more than the expenses of these wait periods and adjustments.
Why Disabled People Run Organizations Low on Resources?
Starting a brand new business venture could be an exceptional opportunity for the disabled people. Aside from meeting different goals and career aspirations, owning and running a private business could provide numerous other privileges as well, including flexibility in working terms and hours. However, at the same time, it is not possible to overlook this fact that disabled business owners do not have/get adequate resources to operate their business efficiently.
There are so many reasons behind it, but the lack of government’s support is most noteworthy amongst them. In virtually all countries, state and federal agencies don’t offer grants to the individuals with diverse disabilities to commence a business. That is why; the disabled population is forced to rely on different loan programs which are often based on sky-high interest rates. As a result, the disabled people got to run and carry on their business with limited resources. The scarcity of required resources hampers their progress in the industry.
The theory that applies to the fact that why are disabled individuals kept from reaching top levels of management and as to why are they low on resources when they run their own organizations is the “realistic conflict theory”. According to this, conflicting interest does not allow the weaker group to obtain and retain desired of scare resources. Lenders do not lend money considering the insecurity of their investment as the fitter people run organizations are better attractions for investors and funders.
