Introduction
Company’s Business Environment and Goal. Dayton Freight Lines is a privately owned, union-free less than truckload (LTL) freight carrier based at Dayton, Ohio. Its core service area is the Midwestern United States, where it has 45 service centers. It has strategic alliances with other companies that enable it to extend its service area throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Guam. Dayton is the second largest transportation firm based at Ohio and is the 18th largest LTL - Freight Company is the country. Its competitors are rival freight companies, including FedEx Freight, Con-way, YRC, UPS and Old Dominion (Logistics Management). Its business space is LTL freight, which entails small loads per customer, requiring its freight trucks to make multiple stops for unloading freight.
Dayton Freight Company’s mission is “to be the recognized leader in providing high quality regional LTL transportation services” (Dayton). Towards this goal, the company is trying to achieve competitive advantage through a long-term strategy of “streamlining processes and trimming delivery times” (Biz Journals). It is also adopting a strategy of growth by adding to its fleet of trucks, trailers and workers.
Discussion of Job Chosen. The job chosen for training for the company is ‘dock worker’. The dockworker has to verify and maintain records of incoming and outgoing shipments, and to prepare items for shipment. The dockworker’s duties include “assembling, addressing, stamping and shipping” merchandise and material (My Majors). If the dock worker marks a package for the wrong address, the entire machinery of the freight company, including a functional fleet and punctual drivers would not be able to deliver the package to the right destination at the right time. An inefficient dockworker, therefore, can cause Dayton Freight Company to lose valuable business, goodwill and profitability. Thus, the dockworker occupies a critical position in the efficiency chain of the company, and correct training of the dockworker assumes utmost importance.
