When Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) developed his Psychoanalysis theory, he believed that people could be cured just by making their thoughts conscious and personal motivations. He believed that the unconscious thoughts and feelings that accompany them could move to the conscious mind in a form of parapraxes, known as “Freudian Slips” or the slips of the tongue. People at the end reveal are speaking out a point that they were not supposed to utter out (McLeod, 2007).
He gave an example of a nutritionist who intended to say “We should always have the best in bread” in one of his public lectures. His tongue made a slip and instead said we should always have the best in bed. Another quite different example of a Freudian slips is when a friend to someone's new confidante may address her using the names of the previous partner their friend had. These slips of the tongue Freud believed were an indication that in the unconscious mind and that there existed no accidents and that every behavior including the tongue slips was crucial and significant (Todd & Bohart 2006). Thus, concluded that all behavior is determined, and thus there are no accidents. However, these Freudian slips though are true, in theory, do not stand in our society. People whether conscious or unconscious make incoherent speeches and slips that could be initiated by other factors other than an unconscious mind, some of which are purely mistakes or accidents (Todd & Bohart 2006).
In conclusion, a simple technique of psychodynamic therapy is a free association in which a patient talks of whatever crossed his mind .In this kind of therapy, a therapist does read some words from a list, and the patient is made to respond to any word that comes to his mind. In this therapy, it is hoped that the chunks of memories that were lost will be disclosed in the course of the free association (Todd & Bohart 2006).
