The people are confused regarding the concept of ozone layer depletion and the global warming, and they usually consider both phenomena interlinked and similar. However, these phenomena are entirely different from each other.
Ozone layer is a layer of isotope of oxygen around the earth. This layer prevents the harmful rays of sunlight from getting into the earth. The harmful rays significantly include UV rays. The UV rays are less penetrative, therefore, cannot pass through the ozone layer. Hence, ozone layer serves as the protective layer of the earth and living beings. On the other hand, due to some repeated processes naturally, holes are formed in this layer. In addition, man-made chemicals such as CFCs; major constitute of refrigeration gases are also responsible for the formation of these holes and the enlargement. Consequently, the UV rays can enter the form these holes and harm the living beings.
Conversely, global warming is the rise in surface temperature of the earth. This elevated temperature may be a result of ozone layer depletion, but it’s not chiefly due to holes in ozone layer. The increase in surface temperature is the result of the industrial factors. The industries and factories liberate heat energy which is produced from the chemical reaction and nuclear reactions. This heat elevates the earth temperature. Consequently, the rise in temperature brings several problems to the living environment. The major consequences include; rise in sea levels, property loss or economic loss, elevation in storms, wildlife habitat extinction, and damage to coastal areas.
The effects of global warming are more severe than the ozone layer damage. The causes of both phenomena are different too. Therefore, they are distinct processes.
