Reflections on the Evolution of the Doctoral Study Model
I have changed my mind severally regarding the study design. Initially, I was set on using mixed methods to explore the perspectives in the doctoral study. I have since changed my mind into using the qualitative approach, particularly the case study traditional method (George & Bennett, 2005). The discussions in class over these study methods convinced me that I could achieve the objectives of the doctoral study by using qualitative methods. Over the weeks, I have had opportunities to revise and fine tune several aspects of my doctoral study. I feel that the most work was done on developing the problem statement. Even though the general contents of the articulation of the problem statement in the first week were retained, I altered the specific details in order to correctly articulate the problem statement.
Initially, the idea behind the doctoral study was to learn from the respondents regarding the phenomena explored in the problem statement. I have since learnt that the doctoral study will not just improve my knowledge on the matter, but also lead to the improvement of business in both general and specific ways. The outcomes of this doctoral study are of importance to the business world. It is necessary for small businesses to comprehend the strategies they need in order to ensure that their businesses thrive well and operate past the first five months. Additionally, the data that is collected from this study may contribute to changes in the society by contributing to the success of existing businesses and inspiring other people to start their businesses (Franco & Haase, 2009).
The theories derived from this study will also provide insights into the strategies necessary to build resiliency in startup businesses, thereby ensuring their success past the first five years of operation. An understanding of the strategies required to ensure the success of new businesses will provide essential information to key stakeholders in venture financiers, entrepreneurs in new ventures and government policymakers (Liao, Welsch & Moutray, 2009).
