Some people think that editing and revising are the same process, but they are not. Revision is the process of addressing the content of your work while editing is the process of addressing the clarity of it. They are accomplished differently and serve different purposes.
During revision the writer will look for ways to improve the content of their paper by considering other information that should be included, or reconsidering information that should not have been included. The writer will make sure that the paper is focused on the topic and well organized, so it doesn’t confuse the issue by bringing in non-salient issues or by having salient information in the wrong place. He will be sure that all the information is included, and that it is understandable. A student who decides to include an additional example of her point is revising her paper.
During editing the writer will look for ways to increase the clarity and efficacy of the writing by finding improvements to make in the tone of the paper, checking for particularly troublesome words that either trigger a particular (and unwanted) thought or to be sure that all words are used clearly considering their denotative and connotative meanings. The writer will also be sure that the information in the work is given in a concise manner, so as not to cloud their ultimate meaning. A student who identifies an awkward sentence and rewrites it is editing her paper.
Because of the length of the process, revision should be the longer of these two undertakings. Editing is most commonly a fairly straight forward matter of correction while revising is a matter of creating new content and synthesizing new information takes longer than does making a sentence conform to previously known quantities.
My question from the material is pretty narrow. It says that one of the ways to best edit your work is to read it aloud to better identify areas that could be improved. Is this because it is then being processed through additional parts of the brain?
