Our group visited the ChildGarden child development center located on 4150 Laclede Avenue. ChildGarden center has both early care and education programs. The vision of the center is to combine teachers and therapists to come up with the best programs to take care of young children. Currently, the school has a population of one hundred students ranging from two to five years old. There are a number of classrooms with a maximum number of children and also special programs. The center also has a well equipped outdoor play area for the children. There is also a room set aside, where children can play and be loud if the weather conditions do not permit them to be outdoors. In addition, the school has special classes set up for children with special needs.
After interviewing two teachers, we were able to establish that twelve to fifteen percent of the children enrolled have special needs. However, the center expects that it will enroll twenty five percent of all students with special needs. ELL students are not segregated from other special needs students. In addition to the teachers, there is other support staff important for the development of the children. Staff like speech therapists also work in the classroom environment to supplement the role of teachers.
Child Garden provides an environment that allows students to communicate freely with their teachers. The center also empowers parents of children with special needs. The center allows children with special needs to learn in the same classrooms as normal children. This is achieved by focusing on the wellbeing of the child first before going into detail about their special needs. This allows the children to develop in a normal society where they are able to challenge themselves against able bodied children, which is regarded as being very successful.
The program for children with special needs is very impressive. The children at this young age are focused on social interactions rather than academic learning. The use of both teachers and therapists allows children with special needs to learn fast. The center also focuses on the wellbeing of the child first. Special needs are considered only when they are relevant. This gives the children with special needs to develop alongside children with no special needs. This method allows the children to challenge themselves and achieves better learning outcomes.
