ADMISSION ESSAY
Home is where the heart is – a commonly known saying, which implies that one is always happy to come back home if they feel comfortable, relaxed and shaken off of any outside worries and stress the world behind the door is filled with. Nonetheless, the feelings of warmth, comfort and protection do not lie solely in the atmosphere one’s house has – although, it is undoubtedly important – but in the way the house is built, furnished and decorated, as well.
Of course, many may argue that the exterior and interior design does not obtain such a great magnitude of influencing one’s perception of their own home – their little, protected world – however, I tend to think that one’s house is the reflection of their inner self, and, thus, is bound to be just as beautiful, warm, cozy and enjoyable as one’s inner world. Therefore, the profession of Interior Designer, although relatively new and yet developing (IIDA, 2015), carries enormous significance in terms of public health, safety and welfare, and creation of the place for one to always be willing to come back to.
The profession of Interior Designer goes beyond the basic need of people to have a place to stay and live at. Apart from creating mood and reflecting the client’s personality, interior designers focus on functionality of the space, virtually making the room or the house “work for you” (Hiller & Fox, 2015). Challenging the space and enhancing the function of the place are the key aspects bound to be addressed by interior designers, as these professionals hold proper education and experience to create good design, beauty, efficiency and comfort within the trusted space. Although the academic preparation is vital to obtain in order to be knowledgeable on building technology, local environmental issues, ergonomics and design fundamentals, creative thinking and aspiration to work with people, understand their needs and expectations and implement the clients’ personal traits into the design of their living space are also crucially important. The idea of turning bare construction walls into a fortress one will feel comfortable, safe and peaceful is a motivational and engaging approach to evaluating the importance of interior design.
Another important aspect of the profession of interior designer is close collaboration with professionals of various qualifications during different stages of projects – mechanical, electrical, construction and load-bearing designers, etc. - as well as being involved in a huge range of tasks necessary for a successful project completion. Understanding clients’ tastes, wishes, expectations, safety requirements, proceeding then to working on preliminary design concepts and final design recommendations, preparing working drawings evaluating design solutions upon completion requires various skills, and is an immensely prepossessing activity to be involved in.
Being long-engaged into the world of fashion, and having rich imagination and creativity, I know how important self-expression is for an individual. Having communicated with many talented people, I have been able to get some valuable insight into the world of creative and gifted people and preserve my own individual ideas and way of thinking, enhancing them with richer gamut. Being genuinely interested in the field of design, and understanding the importance of interior design profession, I can implement my imagination, analytical and observation skills, ability to work hard and meet deadlines into challenging and rewarding process of mastering the peculiarities of this profession and creating functional and aesthetic spaces.
