Novel Composite Materials
Ashraf, A. “A Novel 3-D Graphite Structure from Thermally Stabilized Electrospun MWCNTs/ PAN Nanofibril Composite Fabrics.” International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology 70/9-12: 1731-1738. 2014. Web. April 24, 2015.
Graphite is the material of choice for future products, including sports items and automobile parts. The paper is interesting as it throws light on a method to create strong graphite materials. The paper describes the activation of a cohesive energy using hot-pressing technique to build strong multiwall carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. The process entailed electrospinning the carbon nanotubes and then thermally stabilizing the fabrics under static pressure.
Jason, F. et al. “Synthesis by Spark Plasma Sintering of a Novel Protonic/ Electronic Conductor Composite: BaCeZrYO/ SrTiNbO (BCZY27/ STN95).” Journal of Materials Science 48/18: 6177-6185. 2013. Web. April 24, 2015.
The paper is interesting as it indicates the inhibition of electronic conductivity in a protonic/ electronic composite. This aspect could be suitably leveraged while creating electronic components. The paper describes the synthesis of a two-phase ceramic composite by solid state reaction and by spark plasma sintering. The researchers found that spark plasma sintering resulted in denser components. Secondary phases were not evident in grain boundaries.
Huey-Shan, H. et al. “In Vitrio Study of a Novel Nanogold-Collagen Composite to Enhance the Mesenchymal Stem Cell Behavior for Vascular Regeneration.” PloS One 9/8: 1-18. 2014. Web. April 24, 2015.
The paper was interesting as it indicated the potential of collagen gold composites in enhancing vascular regeneration protocols. The paper described the preparation of Type I collagen containing gold nanoparticles. The resultant composites displayed high levels of focal adhesion, and were observed to stimulate endothelial cell differentiation. This indicated possible utility in constructing tissue-engineering scaffolds.
Wang, W. et al. “Preparation of a Novel Composite Material by Emulsion Polymerization of Vinyl Acetate and Vinyl Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane.” Journal of Polymer Research 18/5: 1119-1124. 2011. Web. April 24, 2015.
The paper was relevant as it confirmed that vinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) could be successfully incorporated into a PVAc matrix through emulsion polymerization. The process involved preparing the vinyl POSS using the ‘corner-capping’ method and then subsequently chemically bonding the product to synthesize a POSS/PVAc composite that displayed higher thermal stability than the parent polymer. This transformed composite could be used in components requiring increased resistance to heat.
Yicheng, D., Ning, Y., and Mark, K. “Novel Lightweight Sandwich-Structured Bio-Fiber-Reinforced Poly(Lactic Acid) Composites.” Journal of Materials Science 49/5: 2018-2026. 2014. Web. April 24, 2015.
The paper was relevant as it indicated the possibility to use biodegradable materials to create strong automobile floor components. The paper described the development of bio-based lightweight sandwich structured composites without relying on adhesives. The products developed possessed deflection requirements required for automobile load floor applications.
