In addressing the antimicrobial resistance, it is important to note that lack of profitability in the big pharmaceutical companies has led to a decline in research and manufacture of antimicrobial drugs. Thus, an initial step in addressing antimicrobial resistance needs to relate to obtaining finances for research and development aimed towards antimicrobial resistance. Having a fund especially on a global level may encourage scientists to pursue their ideas in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (Towse and Sharma 333).
Another step may involve the control of usage of antimicrobial drugs. There is increasing cases of self-medication and over the counter prescriptions for antimicrobial drugs (Kelley 516). According to Keown et al. (1623), the overuse of antimicrobials contributes significantly to the development of antimicrobial resistance. Incorporation of various technologies such as diagnostic technologies can be significant in addressing the over-prescription of antimicrobial drugs. Consequently, community awareness campaigns are necessary to sensitize individuals on the problems of overusing microbial drugs.
There is also need to evaluate current antimicrobial medication to try to investigate their inefficiencies and maybe re-engineer them to overcome some issues. This will require efforts of scientists as well as individuals who have used certain antimicrobial drugs. It is will be a collaborative effect from both the society and the scientific world.
The lack of scientists in the field of research and development can have detrimental effects to tackling antimicrobial resistance. As such, it is important to invest in developing scientists in the different fields such as biochemists and social scientist tow work together in developing strategies that can be applied in addressing antimicrobial resistance. Surveillance is also crucial in obtaining real-time information to enhance drug access. Resources need to be provided for the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (Sifaw et al., 8).
