A weight on Mohammed which is dragging him. It’s the weight of hopelessness and despair.
The story takes place in Tunisia. Upon a brief internet search, the country of Mohamed becomes clear.
The main conflict is between greed, corruption and honesty. Mohammed is trying to earn an honest living, but his education cannot get him a job as references and bribes are there and his labor also requires him to bribe police officers.
The climax of the plot comes when Mohammed is beaten by the police by alleging that he works without a permit and confiscate his cart while beating him.
The narration is in a third person perspective, always addressing the people by names. Near the end, it takes a first person perspective in one paragraph.
Hierarchy is shown in Education, where Mohammed a History major cannot get a decent job whereas Technical degree holders such as Engineers and Technicians easily acquire jobs.
People have strong faiths in their religion but do not follow the tenets of their religion. They believe in God but do not follow his commands.

His hope slowly decreases from slightly hopeful to utter despair and leads to his immolation.

The regime ruling the state is shown corrupt in this story. When the law makers and police are corrupt, it leads to injustice and corruption. Everyone becomes corrupt as there is no one providing justice.

The verb tense shifts upon Mohammed’s immolation.

The story depicts despair on account of Mohammed and evokes feelings of disgust from the reader regarding the goings of the society.
No equality between social classes is depicted in this story. Life seems to be going on in a jungle where the powerful can take all they want.
The use of power to not even let vendors sell fruits and earn an honest living is how colonialism is depicted in this story.
The story very closely depicts the story of Tarel al-Tayrb Mohamed Bouazizi. The harassments he had to endure and his final act are quite accurately described.
