“Occupation” by Lisa Gorton
Initially reading the poem, I didn’t get the idea of it. Upon listening to it, I observed that the woman was reciting it in a painful manner. It appeared as though it was a mechanism of depicting her emotions. Upon rereading the poem, I realized that the poetess is addressing a person who is inconsiderate of his actions regarding others. This leads to his lonely life which however he tries to cover it, still shows.
She tries to talk to him one last time, addressing him to grab his attention. She addresses him and tells him that if he does not listen to her right now, then he would be lost in his world. The world, where people surround him and seem to know things, but never truly understood what he actually feels. The poetess understands his despair, his loneliness despite being surrounded by all those people whom she addresses as corridors. She says that once he leaves without listening to her, he will be lost in corridors. By using this simile, she tries to say that they have an ulterior motive and like a corridor, will lead you only where they want you to go.
But no matter how they engage you in conversation and seemingly make him happy, it will be fruitless in hindsight. He would be left alone in the end, in his home/palace which she addresses as a casket i.e. it would be his final resting place. He would sit alone like “soul of a wall”, i.e. without joy. Her final line of “in the aloneness of your life, that lustre on tiles no graffiti confides” she again addresses his loneliness on how his “graffiti” i.e. his extravagant lifestyle does in no way hide “that luster on tiles” i.e. his true self, his loneliness.
