Dear President ___________________,
Good Day! I am Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin and a strong advocate of environmental protection. I am writing this letter to you to show you my intentions about being your environmental advisor. I believe that I will be able to address the environmental issues of our nation because I have always considered and prioritized the economic effects of the different environmental issues. Personally, environmental issues should be prioritized by the nation because they greatly affect other aspects of the community and the economy. Some of the known effects of environmental issues are changes in the amount of global rainfall and temperature, changes in the marine nutrient cycle, alterations in the resiliency of the marine ecosystem, and the changes in the seasons. These changes can lead to more serious problems like mass extinction, severe drought, and flooding. In totality, addressing of the environmental issues is a great concern not only for the current but for the future generations as well. As you have read, I hope that I was able to convince you of my determination and passion towards environmental protection. I am really grateful that you took some time off to be able to read my application as your environmental advisor. Rest assured that I will only be more passionate about my work upon your approval of my application.
I am looking forward to your positive response. Thank you so much and God Bless You.
Gaylord Nelson
The application can be supported by the different phenomena that occur as a result of the environmental issues faced globally today. One of the environmental issues are the severe consequences of global warming like changes in the amount of global rainfall and temperature. In an article written by Enzler (n.d.), he stated that during the past century the temperature has also risen by 0.6 +/- 0.2 degrees Celsius. He also added that the amount of rainfall all over the globe will drastically change wherein some of the areas will experience more rainfall than other areas. These changes can lead to rising of the sea levels which can will eventually flood other areas that are below the sea level. If these events take place, many people need to be relocated and other resources may be destroyed. Thus, causing economic problems which greatly affect the development of the nation.
Another effect of global warming is the drastic changes in the marine nutrient cycles. These cycle changes should definitely be prioritized by the nation because it will lead to huge problems like mass extinction as revealed in the study of Kasprak et al (2015). According to the study, the important factor that led to the mass extinction which happened in the end-Triassic period was the disruption of the marine nutrient cycle caused by the altered stability of the biochemical component of the ocean. This is an alarming finding because the disruption of the marine’s biochemical component was the result of the extinction of almost half of the Earth’s plant, animal, and marine life.
A study by Moffitt et al (2015) also revealed relevant information about the consequences of global warming. The authors stated that changes in climate brought about by global warming alters the resiliency of the marine ecosystem. The alteration usually means that the recuperation of the marine ecosystem takes several years. Thus, the government should definitely consider environmental issues as its priority due to the long term effects that can result from it. Also, even if the disruption of the ecosystem takes years to happen, it is still necessary that the government and the community work hard to prevent these dangerous events to take place.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA (n.d.) also posted the possible consequences of climate change in a global perspective. One of the significant effects they have provided was the significant changes of climate all over the world. One of the changes that is currently happening is the more frequent occurrence of extreme drought in different regions of the globe as compared to previous years. This event greatly affects the agriculture sector especially in terms of the overall production rate of fruits, vegetables, and other crops that are needed by the people to survive. Another effect of global warming is the changes in the duration of the seasons (National History Museum n.d.). As an example, certain regions already experience the rain even when the weather is supposed to be sunny. These changes in the cycle of season leads to early development of fruits and flowers from trees which may result to drastic alteration to the chemical composition of the product itself. When these events occur, there will be a big problem on the production of agriculture products which will limit the available resources of the people for their own consumption and even for exporting. Thus, greatly affecting the growth of an economy.
In addition, since it has been known that the production of ore retrieved when mining also releases toxic chemicals during the process, strip mining and large scale mining for that matter must be controlled and limited by the government. This must be done to lessen the possible contribution of mining waste to pollution which can help in the slowing down or halting of the changes brought about by global warming (Sullivan 2005).
Ultimately, one of the greatest recommendation that can be provided is the establishment of the event named “Earth Day”. The earth day will be one particular day which will be used for activities that will address the environmental issues seen globally. This event is being continuously celebrated all over the world by making a pledge to help maintain and improve the environment. Currently, the number of people taking part in this event is approximately 1 billion people and they show their support for this advocacy by doing environmental protection related activities. Some of the most common ways of showing support is the turning off of all lights to help in the conservation of energy (Christofferson 2012).
