Environmental Movement In North America: White Environmentalism Essays Example

The world has been experiencing climate change and the following results of it are alarming many environmentalists. Most of these people are governed by set of scientific rules that gives them an idea that an environmental movement shall be done in order to support the protection and revitalization of the Earth. But there is an underlying issue between races within a certain community. This paper will tackle about the primary idea of environmental movements in North America and why is it mostly white.
The so called term “white environmentalism” is just a connotation that white people are the ones that are mostly involved in environmental movements. Additionally environmental movements in North America only protect the white race. As clearly seen on a report when typhoon Katrina has smashed the county of the Unite States; white people were the ones who easily receive help from the government (Thompson, pp. 13-18). The exposition of the truth that there is a thin line between the white race and black people during the disaster is very vivid (Miles and Austin, pp. 34-38). Another study in Canada has shown that the white race has been more privilege than black people. Moreover, the study has suggested that race inclusion shall be imposed among environmental movements (Gibson-Wood, pp. 642-659).
When the history of racism is tackled, many environmental movements were also affected by it. It is true that during the occupation of the British to the American Continent black people are considered the minority. And they are disgusted because of their natural black color. It can also be noted that the Native Americans were drove away by British invaders; implicating that they are the minority in terms of environmental movements (Merchant, 2007).
When the Native Americans were drove away to their farmland, the white race has started to their jobs and I considered the beneficiary on any environmental movement regarding on farmlands (Alkon and McCullen, pp. 938-950). In conclusion there is still racism in the North American Continent even though it is resolved decades ago. The society has not yet grasps the equality between human beings and can be evidently seen with these environmental movements.
