There are a lot of reasons why people change their appearance. First, they want to diversify their life. For example, I have a friend who has never worn smart suits, he hated them, but one day he fell in love with a girl who didn’t pay attention to him, because she didn’t like men wearing jeans and T-shirts all the time. She preferred serious men who were dressed officially. So he changed his style of clothes, and soon afterwards they got married. He got a well-paid job, as interviewer found his appearance suitable for that work. This case shows how it’s possible to change something in life by changing your appearance.
Second reason why people can change how they look is modern standards of beauty, and they are quite strict. And if one doesn’t correspond to what is generally considered “pleasant appearance”, life can be really hard. From their childhood people see photos of beautiful supermodels and strong men in fashion magazines, play with Barbie dolls with perfect body measurements. Because of this they are persuaded that physical beauty is the key to success. That’s why people go on diets trying to look perfect. Moreover they decide to go under plastic surgery. There are more than 17 million of plastic surgery procedures around the world annually. People are becoming addicted to this and can’t stop changing their appearance even if they don’t need it anymore. A vivid example of such addiction can be Jocelyn Wildenstein, ex-wife of the millionaire, who left her, but she didn’t give up and decided to attract that man again by transforming herself into one of his favorite animals – a cat. After numerous operations she looks awful, her photos can be found easily like an example of abuse of plastic surgery services. It also should be noted that such procedures are popular not only among women, but men too.
In my opinion, plastic surgery can have some bad consequences like depression (because the results aren’t as good as it is expected); or different complications can take place (like in case of one of my acquaintance who adored fast food and was overweight, he decided to make liposuction, but after that procedure he began to gain weight even faster than earlier.) Surgery can be appropriate in situations when it’s a necessary and helpful thing – like in case of a car accident or fire, when people have to undergo reconstructive surgery. Its main purpose is elimination of terrible defects, scars which will prevent the injured from leading normal life (Thompson, 2012). After such operations people feel better and they are really grateful to doctors.
In conclusion it can be said that if people are dissatisfied with their appearance they should first consult a psychologist, who will try to explain where their problems come from, because very often people think they don’t like how they look but in reality it can be just low self-esteem, and change of appearance won’t help (Cash, 2012). We should accept ourselves the way we are, everybody is unique, so it’s a bad idea to copy others. We shouldn’t focus on our little imperfections, we have to reveal our advantages and emphasize them. Individuality is a great thing.
