Describe 3 data elements that are contained in the MPI. State what are the acceptable data for each element? Do the elements that you have selected meet the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act's 3 stages of meaningful use? Discuss how this relates to the patient access and billing functions within a health care organization.
Among the essential data elements contained in the Master Patient Index include the Unique Patient ID, Last and First Name and Birth date. A unique Patient ID # will individually identify a patient such as the Medical Record No., Insurance ID or an Account No. The Last and First Name of a patient are in the form of either text or numerical figure and require values for each patient. On the other hand, the Birth Date is a field type in the form of date (depending on the required format defined in the system. These selected elements potentially meet the defined stages of meaningful use of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health. These 3 elements adhere to the stage 1 of the meaningful use as this represents the data about the patient and are eligible for sharing of information between the patient and the health care organization. These 3 elements also comply with the 2nd stage of the meaningful use as the unique patient ID will allow the patient and the organization to access the information securely. Although the 3rd stage of meaningful use has not been completed, these 3 elements are also ready to comply with it for HITECH to develop standards and policies to increase the objectives of the meaningful use .
List the elements that must be included as part of that history – Past Medical History and Chief ComplaintAmong the identifiable attributes for Past Medical History include Last and First Name, Surgical Procedure / Disease, Start Date, Continuing (Yes / No), End Date, Remarks. On the Other hand, Chief Complaint must include a drop down for reason for visit, short description of the complaint recorded when pursuing care and recommendation or course of action .
