Car theft has become commonplace in Australia. It is estimated that in 2011, there were more than 65,600 car theft incidents. Additionally, only 91 percent of car theft cases are reported to the police. This means that if the other cases were to be factored in this statistics, the number would rise. This essay posits that Car theft results in significant costs to the Australian public. I aim at using two sources of information to develop my essay. Firstly, I would wish to establish the degree of car theft in Australia. For this reason, I will use HILL, P. (1998). Preventing car theft in Australia: "golden opportunity" for partnerships. Canberra, Australian Institute of criminology as my main source of information. Secondly, I will seek to understand the reason as to why this particular crime is on the rise. I believe that at times the best solution to a problem is to address its root cause other than deal with its consequences. Therefore, I picked MAXFIELD, M. G., & CLARKE, R. V. G. (2010). Understanding and preventing car theft. Boulder, Colo, Lynne Rienner Pub as my source of information in this regard.
One old adage insists that prevention is better than cure. Before preventing anything, we must first establish its root cause. Hence, this essay will address the root cause of car theft in Australia before providing the antidote to this recurring crime. I realized that Australia’s data system is archaic. For this reason, I believe that Australia must develop a comprehensive data system that can help its authorities to understand car theft. Furthermore, Australia should utilize its national data systems to evaluate large scale interventions while using regional data systems for national development. HILL (1998) will provide all the latest information regarding crime theft analysis and prevention.
I was surprised to learn that by letting our children play video games, we may be grooming the next car thieves. As much as this may sound as a joke, it is a true reflection of how complex our times have become. Particularly, Grand Theft Auto is considered to be a threat to children of all ages. This was my favorite childhood game (MAXFIELD, & CLARKE, 2010). In the game, the player can shoot, burn, maim and perform other heinous acts. Hill insists that such violent video games should be rated over eighteen for the lessons learnt there in are harmful to young minds.
Gone are the days when the public and the police would be sworn enemies. Due to unprecedented twenty first century crime challenges it is inevitable for the public to work with the police. HILL insists that contemporary police should forge partnerships with individuals and organizations in an effort to control and prevent crime. He maintains that third party policing is the best way to handle car thefts. Police may team up with building inspectors, property owners, environmental regulators, community groups, business leaders, local government personnel and anyone willing to work with the police. However, what happens when the police resort to forceful measures when obtaining the information, this is a question that I wish to explore further. This is but a portion of the information I plan on using in developing my paper.
In a nutshell, I purpose to provide a clear and comprehensive paper that will feature the latest information on the topic of discussion. With the help of Hill and Maxfield and Claires’ extensive material, I believe that I will provide relevant information on the subject at hand. Lastly, I will make sure I read through my essay to ensure that it is cohesive and free of grammatical or spelling mistakes.
