Essay On Crime, Law, And Justice
a. Crime can be described as any actions that represent wrong doing, which are classified by congress or state as a whole to be misdemeanor or offense. Thus, it is commonly punished by the authorities and by the government’s common law due to various criminal categories identified as an offense against public law.
b. Deviance refers to the lack of conformity to the social norms. Thus, the social norms vary from one culture to another. An example of deviant is when a person acts in contrast with the social norm within the society where he or she belongs to. These actions are violation of the society’s behavioral standards, which also includes rules that were formally enacted.
c. Crime and deviance are related to one another as they pertain to a person’s actions and behaviors that oppose the society’s ethical, legal, and behavioral standards. Additionally, criminal laws may evolve based on the majority’s actions with respect to the society’s norms.
2) a. There are many examples in the society that show illegal actions but not seen as deviant at all. One good example is the traffic violations, which most of the motorists know are illegal, but such actions are still being committed.
b. We described deviance as something that is being acted upon against the social norm. We all know that traffic violation is illegal, but not deviant at all. If such violations are deviant, then there will be no traffic rules that resulted to traffic violations. People who violate these rules are not just one or two in numbers, but they are thousands. Therefore, we cannot say that violating traffic rules, regardless of its intentions, is a deviant act.
