Essay On The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Framework

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Framework was developed by the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) for the purpose of improving the standard of living of individuals. Poverty alleviation was the main goal of this framework, which was outlined to be achieved by solely considering the goods and services that the ecosystem provided to humanity (Lazarus 638). It acts as a guide to different groups, four, in the society and provides a detailed plan on how to achieve the four key volumes outlined in the framework. The four categories of ecosystem goods and services were identified: supporting services which underlies the other three types of services, and include processes such as soil formation, nutrient cycling and primary production; provisioning goods which include food, water and forage; regulating services, which influence processes such as water quality, flood regulation and disease regulation, and cultural goods and services, which considers factors influencing recreational, educational, and aesthetic aspects (Costanza 352).
The four frameworks vary in different regions, highly depends on the rate of population growth rate, which expands consumption growth rate as well. Landscape and climatic change gear to the rate of population as well, in that it tends to determine the rate of population growth rate for the human beings. Studies show, alleviation of poverty can be improved by improving the life expectancy level, which directly rely on the ability of human beings to provide food (Turner 88). A rough terrain might be hard for human beings to maintain their ability of growing crops, as well as unfavorable climatic change. These two serves as hindrance to poverty alleviation with a low rate of food production by people around the described region, making it difficult to achieve the expected framework goal and within the stipulated period.
