Answer: The business of shipping and doing commerce through sea routes started almost 5000 years ago. The primitive economies which began commerce through marine routes developed into a full-fledged option as it was convenient to carry large quantities of goods and with relative ease.
Europe led the way in maritime trade. The developments during the latter half of 20th century for maritime commerce showcased the development of container mechanization and specialized shipping.
The opening of Mediterranean Sea route also paved way to development of Venice as entrepot through which goods were traded, stored and re-exported. The development of Genoa port city in the region led to economic developments in the region.
