It has been more than eight years that I have moved to the United States, and I did not know a word of English language. It was quite an ordeal to face since I had to study and communicate in the native language. So I decided to join an institute that would offer teaching English to foreigners, and I enrolled in an ESL class. I began learning the basics of the language and acquainted myself with the vocabulary, grammar and enunciation of words. I also took to listening to English programs and trying to imitate the spoken language.
Studying further in college, I took up all the courses that were purely in English language like Math, Social Sciences, and Business Studies. Initially, it was hard for me because I had to translate words from Arabic to English in order to understand texts and complete my assignments. It was a tedious and time-consuming activity for me, however soon enough my uphill struggle paid off. I scored quite well in these subjects, and my efforts were always appreciated.
Today I feel much confident with English. I am fluent in the spoken language; don’t face any difficulty in interpreting it and can read and write English with ease. It has been eight years since I have not visited my hometown, and I have had the maximum impact of English in my everyday life. I work as a substitute teacher, and I also tutor others, so there is a lot of communication between me and native speakers that enhances my spoken English and also builds confidence to speak with assurance.
