An Event that Changed My Life

When I was eighteen years old and had to choose my major, I was facing a serious dilemma: chasing my dreams or worrying about future and facing reality? The major that I was interested in did not seem to have a promising financial future, and the majors that did guarantee this issue did not attract me at all. When I talked to my friends, I realized they somehow have similar questions, so we decided that instead of relying on booklets that explained each major in details, we should go outside and talk to people who used to be in our shoes when they were eighteen.
We visited three departments in a big university. In the Theatre department, everyone was happy. They all had chosen it because it used to be their dream ever since they were children, and now studying theatre in a great university was their lifetime dream coming true. In the engineering department, we had different responses. Someone who studied Mechanics told us he has always loved cinema and has chosen this major because he has always been good in math and that everyone used to tell him that this major has a bright future. He said that he is thinking about quitting because he now realizes that he cannot waste his life with something he does not even enjoy. In contrast to him, his classmate told us she could not be happier about her major, as she has always been interested in engineering and working with machines.
We interviewed nearly twenty people studying a variety of subjects, and the results were interesting. None of the people who had decided to do something with their lives that they did not like were happy and hopeful about the future. That day was so influential that even before I talk to my friends about the interviews, I had made my final decision.
