The president of the United States of America, Barrack Obama delivered his State of the Union (SOTU) Address last January 28, 2014 before the Congress at the Capitol Hill, and before all the Americans watching from their homes. The speech was delivered during the joint session of the Congress and it talked about the achievements of the Obama administration for the past five years. While telling the world about the achievements, Obama stressed on the how Americans could unite regardless race, party, economic status, and color in order for America to further move forward toward prosperity. It’s time for more actions he mentioned on the issues of labor, migration and unemployment insurance. He asserted that every American can pursue their dreams as long as everybody works for the further advancement of American unity.
Speaking before hundreds of personalities is far more serious than speaking before a large sized class room. It takes huge amount of confidence, wits and stage presence to be able to nail it. President Obama’s manner of presentation is just appropriate in front of the legislators and other government officials. Without any visual presentation, he successfully catches the attention of the audience by creating connections. He called everybody’s attention by pointing out the achievements and challenges of all issues affecting the lives of every American. He even made specific examples that nobody can resist to listen.
In Obama’s discussion on labor, education, gender, and equal opportunity, he made it a point to pause. The pauses are perfect as the basis issues are the core of American dream that everyone elsewhere in the world would like to pursue. Particularly in the phrase that says, “Give them a raise,” (Obama, 2014) he paused and made a serious but sincere facial expression. The phrase is his punch line when talking about raising the salaries per hour of hard working Americans from the blue collared jobs to the white collared ones. Because wage is one of the most pressing issues in the country, Obama’s pause gave way for sincere and deafening applause from the audience.
Moreover, when he talked about the equal opportunity of women in the workplace, he made it a point to raise his voice to tell the world that he is serious in addressing the gender gaps within the United States of America. He stressed and paused in the phrase that says, “If women succeed, America succeeds,” (Obama, 2014).
Barrack Obama even prior to his becoming the president of the country, he is known for his excellent prowess in public speaking. He has the mastery of the language that is an advantage for him as he knows how to play with words and their appropriate enunciations. For his many years of public engagement within the ranks of the Democratic Party, he has mastered the art of delivering a speech including his body gestures. His body language coordinated with every word that comes out from his mouth. Despite the huge audience, he managed to make his speech as intimate as he can to prove his sincerity. The president’s effortless means of getting his message across all walks of life is adorable. Even just watching his video will make every American feels that the president of the country is talking to him/her. He has ways with communication that will make any viewer feel the attachment. Throughout his speech, he remained attach to his audience. Every eye-contact, smile, hand movements, posture and volume of voice coordinated to make a perfect delivery of the most awaited speech of the American president. In the beginning of the speech, it seemed like scripted. It is however understandable as the president and the audience are still developing the natural rapport.
