Storytelling helps in establishing personal brand, but there are certain changes that need to be made based on where it is being used. People do not take much time out to read lengthy paragraphs on a website, so it is always better to keep it nice and concise and brief. Too many expressions are not welcome. While telling a story interpersonally, it is essential to open and close the curiosity, taking the story to climax and then simplifying it, the flow of the story matters a lot, in this case. While interviewing, storytelling becomes heavily dependent on specifying of which context the story is being told in to avoid general responses.
Stories that should be practiced need to be very practical and easy so that the audience can relate them with what message is being conveyed. Sometimes stories are confused with essays; clear demarcation needs to be made between the two. In an interview, when the interviewer wants the interviewee to speak his mind out, to bring his own thoughts to the table, i.e. in an open-ended interview storytelling works best to specify the perimeters within which the discussion is to stay.
While interviewing, the non-verbal gestures like yawning, or any sign of anxiety means that the interviewee is feeling rather bored and here is where a good story can turn it on its head. A good story can refresh interviewees. However, interviewer needs to mind the kind of story that he is telling because the interviewer really has to be able to relate it easily with the questions that are being asked. A gap between the two can lead to de-shaped responses.
