The team did not work well as expected. There were many challenges that the team encountered making it difficult to achieve the expected results. Firstly, there was challenge of cultural differences, making it difficult for the team members to work together due to lack of proper working structures. The cultural difference also created communication problems making it to perform tasks as fast as possible due to difficulties in communicating with each other, among the team members. Another challenge was the lack of long term goals that were to be attained, making the team lack focus, hence its functioning was negatively affected.
There are a number of ways in which the alignment of efforts would have been improved on the team. To start with, there was need to align the efforts of the group horizontally, so that all the team processes could be directed toward achieving the expected group results (Salas, Kosarzycki, Tannenbaum & Carnegie, 2005). Secondly, there was a need to ensure that a clear work structure was designed with an objective of guiding team members of the processes and procedures that they would follow in completing the team tasks. This would have been effective in ensuring team members from diverse cultural backgrounds were working using the same set of processes rather than a diverse set of processes, thus, enhancing the team working harmony.
Additionally, there was the need to involve the team members in developing the purpose of the team working together, so as to ensure that all the members are committed towards attaining the objectives in the long term (Salas et al., 2005). Another critical aspect in which alignment would have been improved, was taking into consideration the different cultural aspects of the team members when developing the group norms as well as processes. This would have been effective in ensuring that team members felt that their cultural ways of doing things were respected; thus, working hard towards achieving the team’s objectives.
