The embracement of technology and subsequent up-gradation of technological systems and processes may often lead companies to restructure and resize its business operations. In other words, this means that more companies are heading for automated processes and systems leading to lesser workforce and subsequent technological unemployment.
The technological unemployment has led to ethical dilemma in which companies are forced to rethink their strategy. This is mainly because embracing automation leads to cutting down of workers thereby leading to higher unemployment. Change brings in opportunities as well as risks. A possibility of chronic and widespread technological unemployment may lead to undesirable societal as well as individual adversity and instability. Technological unemployment has led to increase in crimes related to information technology. Such crimes pose to threaten human beings by breaching into intellectual property rights, security and privacy.
Companies should strive to develop and implement an ethical culture that helps to safeguard the obligations and rights related to intellectual property, information rights, quality of systems and processes, control and accountability and enhance the overall quality of life of individuals. Ethical concerns have been raised due to critical issues related to high usage of computer by most firms, the declining costs of storing information and the breakthrough in internet and networking. These three developments in information technology has led to technological unemployment. Hence, it is necessary for relevant stakeholders including organizations, communities, government and the policy makers to devise strategies and policies that help in embracing technology so as to enhance quality of life and foster the development of a welfare society.
