In essence, what is the broom? A base and flexible rods attached to it. Today it is almost impossible to find brooms or brushes with natural bristles. Mostly all of them are synthetic. It is just the same plastic in the different thickness of line attached to the base. Hence, in order to make a similar broom it is just enough to get the same line (Bridgewater, A. 2007).
Thus, first what we need is to find a base for a broom. An old brush is a perfect choice for this purpose. The base can be plastic or wooden.
If there is no old brush, it does not matter. There is a possible solution of this problem: just drank it from a suitable board with the length of 25 - 30 cm, the width of 5 cm and thickness of 1.5 – 2 cm. First of all, the old brush should be "shaved", i.e. any remaining old stubble should be removed from the brush. This operation is easily performed with the use of usual office knife. The bristles are cut flush to the ground. There are bundles of fibers remain inside the brush, in their places of attachment to the base. But it absolutely doesn’t matter. The main thing is that the bristles do not stick out.
The next step is the preparation of the main raw material of our future broom - plastic bottles. For this almost any plastic bottle containers may be used – from 0.5 liters to 3 liters in volume. The main condition is that it is unwrinkled and that it have a cylindrical shape in its central part (without grooves, hollows and so on). By the way, it is practically impossible to use five-liter plastic bottles, since in most cases they have a concentric groove over their entire height – stiffeners. It should also be noted that the thickness of the polyethylene in different bottles is also different. Beer bottles are made thicker than the packaging for lemonade and mineral water. The thickness also depends on the volume of the packaging. The bottles with greater volume have thicker walls (.
The next step is to take an empty plastic bottle, remove the label, wash inside and dry it. Then cut it with an office knife as shown in the photo with red lines below: cut the central cylinder and neck with cork. The neck should be cut below the wide ring, in which the cork abuts. Cone neck and the bottom are not being useful for our broom. They can be possibly used to do one funnel and a bowl for the cat.
Now, actually, it is necessary to obtain the line for the bristle manufacture of our future broom. For this it is necessary to cut the flat strip from cylinder. You can certainly do it with scissors, but it is a very tedious process. For its quickness and ease it is enough to build a simple cutter.
Next, from the bottom of the slot by 5 millimeters, exactly perpendicularly to the vertical horizontal, do a cut with the depth of 18 millimeters. This is a place for the knife. As the knife blade we use a blade of the office knife. Break off a piece of the blade with a length slightly smaller than the width of the bar, insert it into the slot and fasten a pair of screws. Our cutter is finished now (Baldati, 2015).
With the next step, in fact, begins the process of turning a simple blank-cylinder in the long ribbon of plastic. Incised the end of the cylinder with scissors, do the beginning of the tape. It is enough to make an incision with a strip length of 8-10 mm and a width of 5 mm. Then paste it into the beginning of the strip cutter under the knife and insert bottle into vertical slots above the knife. Then take a cutter in the left hand and pull the tip of the strip with the right hand. The bottle is rotated into the slots from the knife comes out flat ribbon trim. The main thing is to pull the tape smoothly without jerking. Thus, we turned the blank-cylinder in a long polyethylene tape. By the way, one bottle of two and a half liters turns into 17 meters of a line. From the bottle of one and a half liters we can get 11 meters. But the blank-tape is too soft for brooms and, moreover, continues having a ring shape of a bottle. To give a tape the required characteristics it is necessary to heat it. This can be done by a candle, a blowtorch or gas burner. It is also possible to use an ordinary kitchen gas stove.
Picking up a piece of tape, as far as arm span, it is necessary to continuously and at a uniform rate hold it above the fire source. During the heating, the tape is straightened, the edge are fold it inwards. In cross-section it is no longer flat, but semicircular. When heated, the main thing is to choose the optimal speed of drawing. If you pull it fast - the tape does not have time to warm up and stay flat. If there will be a delay - it can be overheated and even burn through (it just melts and breaks). In the photo above you can see in left how soft and twisted was the tape before heating, and to the right how hard and straight it has become after. So we got an excellent solid line from a plastic bottle! Now you only have to construct a broom.
All brooms consist of individual panicles. Their number depends on the size of the base of the future broom. An obtained line we cut into strips with scissors to the same length of 20 centimeters. Take two circumcised necks from the plastic bottles, glue them together. How to cut the necks I'll tell you at the end of the article.
After the glue is completely dry, fills the resulting sleeve with a stubble - a cut line. How many sticks are in the same sleeve is not considered, just stuffed tightly until you can insert the rods. Further, they should be well-secured in the sleeve. To do this, move the hub in the middle of the beam, and the ends of the rods in the same coat with adhesive to a depth of sleeves or a little more. Instead of glue it can be used the sealant from the tube. When harden, it will secure the rods in the sleeve. Return the bush on the edge of the beam and leave until the glue or sealant will completely dry.
While our panicles are drying, prepare the base: fasten the corks to the base with screws, two self-tapping screws on each, placing them along the lines of a broom using. So they are guaranteed not to throw up when sweeping. Corks can be arranged in one line. The broom will be thin. If corks are arranged as a zigzag, the thickness of the bristles will work in almost twice as much.
When the panicles are completely dry you can finally assemble our new broom. To do this, simply screw the panicles into the cork on the bottom.
